
In 1979, the Communist Party of China held its Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee, adopted an open door policy and embarked the task of leading China to the four modernizations. China entered a new era of Original art,Contemporary art,Modern Art. Chinese intellect山als and artists have experienced the most relaxed academic and artistic environments since 1949.. They reflected on the past era and set their earnest eyes to the world. The delayed meeting between Chinese art and western modern art stunnned the Chinese intellectuals who just experienced social tribulation and spiritual destitution. They had a strong thirst and desire for knowledge. Their eagerness for the lost time and the enthusiasm to make up for the missed contacts , ith the artistic developments of the world was unprecedented, cent of the enthusiastic scholar painters who worshiped their predecessors.

In 1942, the Chinese Communist Party leader, Mao Zedong, publishedd the famous article, A lecture note in Yan’ an on Literature and Art. He proposed that literature and art should serve the politics, serve the revolution and the war effort and serve workers, peasants and soldiers, and literature and art to be subject to the revolutionary requirements stipulated by the Communmist Party of China during each specific period of time. Mao Zeddong’s talk exerted great influences, and was spread nationwidde through various channels. During the war against Japanese invasion, many progressive intellectuals, including those leftft-wing wood engraving artists in Shanghai, gathered in Yan’an from various parts of China. During the time of war and revolution, Chinese traditional oil painting had lost its populariity, especially those scholar paintings that advocate deliberatcte brushworks. Under the arduous environment of the Shaannxi-Gansu-Ningxia Region under the control of the Commurisst Party, only a few painters were still engaged in oil paintings.
